Katy Perry takes top spot of the U.S. album chart for the first time

Katy Perry topped the U.S. album chart for the first time on Wednesday, dethroning Eminem’s reign in the chart for seven weeks.

According to Nielsen SoundScan, Perry’s third studio album “Teenage Dream” has sold a career-high 192,000 copies throughout the week ended August 29. Also, she was the first solo woman to go in front of the tally since January, when Ke$ha’s “Animal” reigned for one week on the list.

Meanwhile, Perry’s breakthrough release album, 2008’s “One of the Boys,” made it to the chart and peaked at no. 9 in July of that year that sold 47,000 copies in its first week. However, its best sale status came throughout the Christmas week of 2008 when it gained more sales of about 63,000. As of today, it is currently at no. 86 position with 1.3 million records sold.

On the number two spot, American Idol season 3 winner Fantasia started her newest offering “Back to Me” after news on failed suicide attempt. Her album sold 117,000 copies and became her highest selling album to date.

Also, former no. 1 Eminem was down two notches to no. 3 with “Recovery,” selling 98,000 copies this week, which take its total to 2.3 million after 10 weeks.

In the fourth spot was Usher, with his album “Versus” whose 46,000 unit start marked a big dip from his 329,000-unit start in April, with his then album “Raymond v Raymond.”

Little Big Town claimed the fifth spot with their song “The Reason Why.” Also, Kem’s “Intimacy” sank four spots to No. 6 with 30,000 in its second week, while Justin Bieber’s “My World 2.0″ climbed a notch to No. 7 with 28,700. Ray LaMontagne’s and the Devil Wears Prada came out in ninth and tenth position respectively.
