Taylor Swift “Speak Now” Sells 1M Copies in a Week

The country-pop star, Taylor Swift, sold 1,047,000 copies of “Speak Now” album over the week ended October 31, 2010.

Previously, Swift’s “Fearless” album debuted in November 2008 became No. 1 with 592,000 copies sold. It spent 11 weeks at the summit. Now, Swift’s third album is cracking the million-unit mark during its first week of sale in the United States, as the biggest opening tally in more than five years.

A day after its October 25 release, some music experts projected that “Speak Now” album will sell around 800,000 to 900,000 copies by the end of SoundScan’s tracking week. When record sales revealed an almost 1 million copies sold on Monday, it was a sure bet that it can sell higher than what is expected.

In the record history where Nielsen SoundScan began, it was so rare that an album sold at least a million copies in a week. The artists that marked a record were rapper Lil Wayne, who has sold almost 1,006,000 copies in June 2008 for his album “Tha Carter III” and N’Sync holding a record of 2,416,000 units sold in 2000 release for their album “No Strings Attached”.

Swift’s album “Speak Now” has the second-largest sales week of any country album since 1991. In addition, Swift was the first female country pop artist to achieve the biggest sales in a week since 1991. Although Shania Twain, a fellow crossover diva, made the high-water mark in 2002 with her album “Up!” set to 874,000 units sold.

Moreover, “Speak Now” owns the biggest week for any album, regardless of genre, by a woman since 2000, when Britney Spears’ “Oops! I Did it Again” made its way to the No.1 spot with 1,319,000 units sold.

Meanwhile, as the young American Idol build-up artist is hitting the chart with a bang, Swift is opening her own perfume line to the market. Swift is indeed a fresh-talent with lots to offer to her fans.
